Falls from heights
Claims being made against employers have revealed that some businesses are still failing their staff when it comes to managing work at heights.
Some of the most serious consequences are caused by falls from a low height (activities that are carried out close to the ground). They also highlight how important it is for business to be aware of their responsibilities as well as to have adequate employers’ liability insurance in place.
During 2008/9, over 11,000 workers or employees suffered an injury as a result of a fall from height in the workplace. There were also 35 deaths. Although the number is reducing, this is still a significant concern.
Regulations
Despite the implementation of new Working at Height Regulations (2005), some businesses remain unaware of the risks involved and are unwilling to put cheap and simple controls in place. Falls caused by working at heights are happening across a wide range of sectors, including construction, agriculture, motor vehicle repair, haulage and freight transport and across service businesses such as window cleaners, electricians, painters and plumbers.
We can carry out a risk assessment with you to identify areas of your business that could be improved to reduce both the potential for employee related incidents and the number of claims you may make.
Prevention is always better than cure but be sure that your business has the correct levels of liability insurance in place.
